The 1990s 1990 After decades of meeting on Wednesday night, the Phoenix Saguaro Chapter switched to Tuesday. They also moved from their location at the Elks Club on Thomas Road to Orangewood Presbyterian Church in North Central Phoenix. Frank Galasso, a relatively new barbershopper, died of a heart attack in August. Later in the year the Frank Galasso Award was instituted; it is given to an outstanding first-year barbershopper in the chapter at the annual Awards Banquet. In December, the Phoenicians added another annual show to their regular performance season when they put on their first annual Christmas show at the Chandler Center for the Arts. 1991 The 1991 Award of Harmony was given to Mrs. Kathy Castillo, equipment manager for the Arizona Easter Seals Society. A new quartet was formed in the Phoenix Chapter by the name of Standing Room Only. Ted Bradshaw became the new lead of Remember When. The Phoenicians returned to competition that fall at the Far Western District Convention in San Diego where they earned third. On November 9, 1991 the Phoenicians sponsored the charter of the Paradise Valley Chapter. 1992 The FWD Fall Convention was held in Phoenix that year, with Jack Mauney serving as general chairman. At the chorus competition, the Phoenicians became international contenders once again, compiling the third highest score of any chorus in the Society in the fall district contests. Thus the chorus was invited to compete at the International Convention in Calgary, Alberta. Standing Room Only made the district convention weekend a total success by winning the quartet contest. That same week, during the district contest, the Phoenicians released their new recording, "A Championship Affair." Featuring the Phoenicians, Remember When, and the Knudsen Brothers. Randy Stringfellow produced the recording. The "Third Annual" Christmas show took place at the Apache Junction Performing Arts Center for the second year in a row, this year featuring the world-renowned Phoenix Boys Choir. The show marked a departure for the Phoenicians’ traditional formal attire, as this year they were costumed as Santa’s elves. 1993 Approaching their Fiftieth Anniversary Show, held at Gammage Auditorium on February 26 and 27, the Phoenicians were optimistic about the future. With membership climbing and enthusiasm high, with an excellent musical team and polished director, continued guidance and strong leadership from the Board of Directors, there was little doubt that the chorus would once again be an international contender. A few of the veteran Phoenicians had earned all three of the championship gold medals, but the new members wanted their own championship; they had earned it and believed it was time.
